Path Under Construction: Challenges Beyond S-Framed Motion Event Construal in L2 German

چکیده

The encoding of motion events is known to be challenging for second language (L2) users, particularly if the lexicalization patterns their first (L1) diverge from those L2. This paper analyzes oral and written event descriptions produced by advanced L2 users German, an information-dense satellite-framed language. Based on usage error patterns, we discuss six major challenges with respect and, more specifically, path encoding. These clearly go beyond construal acquisition basic pattern (e.g., verb semantics) as well expected related use prepositional phrases semantics, case marking). Advanced actually struggle “smaller” devices such particles, locative directional adverbs, formal functional differentiation, combinatorial potential. aspects seem German either verb-framed L1s (French, Spanish) or (Danish, English). We therefore characteristics target input that might explain why identifying differentiating these devices, usage, patterns. sketch potential implications teaching.

Distributed event-triggered path construction in wireless sensor networks

We consider the problem of guiding mobile agents to visit a subset of sensor nodes called event nodes in wireless sensor networks without location information, where the set of event nodes is not known in advance. As the set of event nodes changes over time, a path needs to be updated on-line. We propose a novel distributed algorithm to construct and update such a dynamic path to visit a set of...

Maintaining Partial Path Consistency in STNs under Event-Incremental Updates

Efficient management of temporal constraints is important for temporal planning. During plan development, many solvers employ a heuristic-driven backtracking approach, over the course of which they maintain a so-called Simple Temporal Network (STN) of events and constraints. This paper presents the Vertex-IPPC algorithm, which efficiently enforces partial path consistency when an STN is extende...

Granularity, space and motion-framed location

The ways in which different languages encode motion events has been the topic of intense analysis and dissection in recent years, especially with regard to Talmy’s (1991, 2000) verb/satellite-framed typology. This chapter shifts course by moving away from motion event typologies and the encoding of canonical motion events. Instead, it shows that English speakers can conceptualise space in terms...

Do L2 Grammars Go Beyond the L1 and L2 Input?

Under normal circumstances, acquiring a first language, compared to acquiring a second or third language, seems to come naturally and successfully. This natural process of first language acquisition (henceforth L1A) appears to be illogical. This is because what first language learners (henceforth L1ers) attain (i.e. a grammar of adult native speakers of a given language) goes beyond the positiv...
